How Internet Works— Explained

Updated: Nov 26, 2021

Hello Everyone, in today’s article, we’ll discuss the Internet. Nowadays, everyone was using the Internet, and for every transaction, we are going to the Internet. In this article, I will discuss how we can use the Internet and how the Internet works.

What is mean by Internet?

So the Internet is a network of networks, so a million systems will be connected in a network to communicate with each other. So for communication purposes, we connect a million systems throughout the world that we call this Internet.

1. E-mail

We can have virtual communication between one system to another system, which means we can share the content through electronic mail. So from one computer to another computer, that’s the main purpose of E-mail.

2. Search engine

3. Chat or Instant messaging

4. Social networking

5. E-commerce websites

These are the main things we can do on the Internet and now how this can be done. So, for example, if you are going with the Google search engine, you find the search box and if you type any word, you will get a lot of results or suggestions.

So how this happens?

Every company will maintain a large server, and it is also a system, having a lot of memory to store all the web pages. Whenever you request this client, that request will be directly sent to a server—for example, Google search engine. If you request a google client, it will be directly sent to the Google server, and this Google will have a lot of websites, lot of web pages. So whenever there is a request from the client, automatically, it will send the request to the server, and it will find the Web pages related to your request, and it automatically gives the response. So one amazing thing is all this happens in a fraction of seconds. So this is how the Internet works, and it is the same for all search engines.

How can we send the request to the server?

For sending a request, we required an application called a Web browser. With the help of this Web browser, we can communicate with servers. For example, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer. So all these are browsers, and to communicate between two systems, we require the browser.

How to identify that particular server?

So, for example, you are giving www.youtube.com and this is called the address of the website or a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). What happens if you give the www.youtube.com in a Web-Browser? Immediately this URL will be converted into IP address. Right. IP address means the numerical form; it will be in a numerical form. An IP address is nothing but the address given to the system, the logical address given to the system, and based upon the IP address, the client request will be sent to that particular server. So every system will be represented in the form of an IP address. So it is somewhat difficult to remember all the IP addresses of different servers, so that’s why that IP address is converted into some English words. So that process, that conversion process, is called DNS (domain name system). So this domain name system is used to convert from the IP address to English words and that English URL to the IP address. So whenever you just Google.com in the web browser and press enter, automatically this URL will be changed to the IP address, and to that IP address, the request will be sent (i.e.) automatically the page will be redirected to that particular address, and automatically from there will get the response. So this process we call a domain name system. For Every URL, there will be some domains. So domain means that if it is a .com, that deals as a commercial website. .org deals as a non-profit organization. .gov deals as a government website. So this is how the Internet will work.

Who will provide the Internet?

We know what the Internet is and what we can do with the Internet, but now who will provide the Internet. So there may be service providers, and they are called us Internet Service Providers. So these providers will give and access to the users to use the Internet. Most of them will be using some phone lines or cables, modems and all these things or cell phones. So by using all these things, we can access the Internet. So who will provide the Internet? That’s Internet service providers (ISP), the ISP will provide the Internet for the users.

How many Ways can we connect to the Internet?

1. Dail-up

Dial-up uses telephone lines to connect to the Internet. So unless you have multiple telephone lines, you can’t use the Internet at a time. So if you do not have multiple lines, if you have only one telephone line, you can use the Internet only as a single interface, which means you can use the Internet or telephone line at the time, but not both.

2. DSL

DSL is nothing but broadband, which is faster when compared to the telephone lines, and it also uses the telephone lines itself. So that means if you’re using multiple lines, one is for the telephone, and another one is for the Internet.

3. Cable

Here we will use cable TV voice to connect to the Internet, which is fast. It is fast than Dial-up and DSL. So when compared to both Dial-up and DSL, it will be somewhat fast.

4. Satellites

It will give the wireless from the Internet service provider. So the Net will be connected through the wireless Internet service provider. So there will be no wires, but the signal strength may be low due to the weather conditions. So it works depends on the weather.

5. 3G or 4G or 5G

So using mobile data, we can also connect to the internet.

These are the ways to connect to the Internet. So this is a basic thing of what is the importance of the Internet and what can we do and how the Internet works.

Summary

So simply, we are just opening the Web browser. We type the URL at the address bar. We automatically enjoy the Internet, but the domain name system will automatically convert the URL into the numbering IP address whenever you type the URL. To that particular IP address, the request would be sent from our system. Again, the response will be coming from the server to the particular client. So every company will provide different servers, and we are communicating. We are communicating means we are communicating with servers—for example, Google Search. As I have said, if you search for any term or anything in the Google search, it is directly redirected to the Google server, so automatically that data will be retrieved from the google server to our client. So this is how we can use the Internet.
